Initially when I viewed the project sites I was nervous about what I could do with my degree, as in the other countries there isn't really a call for a technical communication degree. In Malta, however, I've had the opportunity to not only use my degree, but see what I could do out in the field.
I look back on how I felt about looking at the project sites when I was asked to pick one. I was nervous because I knew that there would be limitations socially for two of the sites, where as Malta provided a challenge, not as a social concept, but in more of a way that we needed to show that we are up to the challenge to do what is needed of us. It was more of a working-oriented challenge, and it was unique compared to the other travel sites I was presented with. Thus I chose Malta.
I was presented with the option to change my selection when we got our fourth site, and once again the challenge wasn't more of a proving of one's self, but more of a limitation placed on one's self towards working a project that had been gift wrapped and handed over. There's so many more project oriented options at the other sites, but none provided that same challenge that Malta provides, and thus I chose Malta.
Now that I'm here, I know I made the right choice. Back home, I tutor at one of the high schools near Michigan Tech, and I am a teaching assistant with the Waino Wahtera Center at Michigan Tech. Here I had the wonderful opportunity to help with tutoring students at the Cottonera Centre. I remember my first day tutoring back home, and how I had this great sense of accomplishment, that I had made an impact on the student's life, and I'm proud to say that they're going off to do something they're passionate about for college. I had that same sense of achievement here. I felt like I had truly made a difference. When working with the amazing folks that run Science in the City, I have that same sense of achievement. What I do for them will potentially be used in the future, and knowing that I'm helping set the bar with evaluation for them is exciting.
After 3 years of preparing to travel, with one year more focused on traveling here than just leadership in general, I'm glad I chose Malta.
